Ya girl had some struggles with acne. I have oily, sensitive skin and I was trying to learn what was good for my skin. From middle to high school, I was just dealing with acne, acne marks, and the slight confidence decrease from having them on my face. And I feel as if everyone has had at least one experience with acne that was just frustrating.
I felt like a scientist the way I was looking up Youtube DIY face masks, going to Lush and getting their face masks, looking up cleansers on Ulta, and even going to see a dermatologist who I sort of disliked. Now, I have much clearer skin, which I’m so grateful for. I finally was able to find the ways that work for me. Now, I’m hoping that my methods work for you. And I will say, most of these are quite simple, but for some reason I overlooked… for years.
1 – I know you’ve heard it before… drink water; and stop drinking so many sodas!
Yes, yes, I know. I can hear the groans and eye rolls. I know it’s crazy that water, H₂O can have such a profound effect on the skin. And yes, it does. I was a dehydrated girly who barely drank enough water. But, I could drink all the teas and sodas in the world. Then, I would wonder why I was breaking out so much?!
So, I started to drink water. A LOT. I have a 40 oz Stanley cup that I religiously use. (Not an ad, but 10/10 would recommend). But, I drink around 1 ½ of my Stanley cup every. single. day. And what do you know? My skin began clearing up! I have also stopped drinking sodas and teas a bunch. I’m mostly a water girl, which my middle and high school would probably never believe.
I’m telling you, once I stopped drinking sodas as much, you can TASTE the difference. I mean, I had an upset stomach on my sister’s birthday while we were out. So, I ordered a Sprite to help, and all I could taste was syrup. I could barely finish ¼ of the drink because of the syrup flavor. Now, I occasionally drink tea. The keyword is occasionally. I have some ginger tea and others that I’m blanking on, but I don’t drink Arizona or Pure Leaf
Now, you’ve heard it here first: drinking water actually does help you?! 😮
2 – Stop touching your face?! Do you know where your hands have been!?
We’re all in the habit of doing it. You feel something on your face and you touch it to scratch that itch, get that lint off of you from your clothes, whatever it may be. And this is what I will say: please don’t do it! I’m telling you, you do not want to be touching your face after touching some of the surfaces that other people have touched. Because, let’s be honest, some people are nasty. Need proof? Go to a public restroom right now and just look at the way people leave those bathrooms.
I mean, I feel like it says a lot when there are signs in the bathroom, reminding people to wash their hands. And some just don’t anyway?! I have been in the bathroom so many times and seen some people just get out of the bathroom and just walk out after flushing. There are other times when they wash their hands with water or pretend to wash their hands by turning on the water.
Now, this situation may also occur: You have a pimple on your face and you realllyyy want to pop it. It’s just there! You can get it off of your face in 5 seconds or less! And I will say this: I understand. I have done it before, obviously. I have a method I use FOR ME whenever I have a pimple. I do my regular routine and wait for it to get to a head. Once it has, I wash my hands, I apply gentle pressure. Once I’m finished, I wash my face and put a pimple patch on it to stop acne marks from forming.
If you are touching your face, just make sure that, at the very least, your hands are clean!
3 – have a good skincare routine
I have seen some people’s skin care routine. I have seen the 13 step skincare routine, glass skin routine, I have seen it all. And I’m glad that those people have found the products and routine that works best for them. For me, I like to keep my skin care routine as simple as possible. When I would try all these new products on my skin, I would just break out!
Sometimes I would love the product or the company and just hope that my skin would just adapt. Sadly, it didn’t. It became stubborn, and I just had to find another product. But when I found the products that my skin loves, or at the very least tolerates, it was like finding the Holy Grail. So, I would say have a skincare routine that works best for you.
I will say though, it took me years to find the skincare products that I use now. I was experimenting with my skin for years as well just trying to find what was best for me. But, luckily for me, my search is over. If you want to know my skin care routine, then let me know!
4 – Eating greasy foods huh 🤨… where’s the vegetables
I like to think of your body giving you physical symptoms whenever there’s something internally going on. There are some people out there who can eat the worst foods known to man and still wake up with the best skin ever. For me, that wasn’t the case. I was eating crap food all the time, and was then wondering why my skin was breaking out. For me, it was a mystery unsolved for many years. But all the unhealthy fats and oil just wasn’t doing it for me anymore. I started to cook for myself and what do you know… the acne started to get less intense.
Now, I will say that FOR ME, having a horrible diet did not help my acne. At all. For you, it may be a different story. If you are someone like me that has horrible breakouts after eating junk, if you can, lessen the junk food a bit. At the very least, add in a vegetable or two in there to balance it out a little.
5 – wash the dirt off of your face!
You can’t be slacking in your routine and expect perfect skin. Again, some people are blessed with amazing genetics. They can sleep in their makeup, not wash their face, and they have an amazing glow (that isn’t oil). For me, my face likes a routine. It likes to feel squeaky clean. And, I also like to feel nice and clean when I wake up and right when I’m headed to bed to fall asleep.
You don’t want dirt building up on your skin, especially if you have oily skin. No, no, no. You have to think, your skin is shedding every single day! And all of that dead skin, sebum (oil), and just dirt are on your face. Just like when you take a shower, you also need to wash that face! So, just do your best to wash your face every day. If you wash it once a day and that’s sufficient for you, great! 2 to 3 times, cool!
I also just want to make sure that you don’t scrub your face to death. I need you to have some skin remaining when you finish cleaning it.
