I know there are people who are so worried about the future that they can’t enjoy the present. I also know that there are people out there who are so stuck on the past that it puts a film on the present. It robs them of seeing the present and how much it has changed. For me, I was the person who always wanted to plan ahead for the next big step.
And, well… I still do, but to the extent that I used to. I now allow myself to have those spur of the moment days, because that’s what the little moments that you cherish are. Those moments that were unexpected, but were very welcomed into your memory.
Know that you DON’T have to know everything today
Sometimes I feel as if those who rob themselves of that are those who want to have everything be known to them. But there’s a mysterious part of life that sometimes people dislike: the unknown. They want the path to be on a map that’ll lead them to their destination. It’ll let them know of their future obstacles and the paths to go around it.
Yes, I want to clarify. You can prepare for a situation as much as you can. But, I also want you to know that you usually can NEVER predict the outcome of a situation. There have been many times when I would prepare myself for ALL the things this person could say to me. And guess what? I was never even close. Sometimes, I would stress myself out trying my best to prepare for the situation, when all I needed to do was just know that I’ve prepared the best that I can and the rest would follow through.
So, this is an exercise that I want you to do. Whenever there’s a situation where you have no idea what the future holds, I want to say this: It’ll work itself out. The Universe/God/Lord will figure out the rest. Then, take your mind off of the situation. Do an activity you love or watch a movie. Just do anything to keep your mind off of it.
Ever since I have done this, I have felt so much more at ease. It allows me to just focus on what I can and then just feel like the rest is being taken care of. Because it always does. It always works itself out.
Allow the past to be the past
I have seen people who refuse to allow the present to come to light since they’re hidden in the dark past. They use themselves as an anchor that drowns them. All they have to do is just acknowledge their past. I’ll admit, there are some parts of the past that have a lot of trauma with them. And, I know it seems weird, but there’s a quote from Kung Fu Panda 2 that I always like to think about:
“Your story may not have such a happy beginning but that doesn’t make you who you are. It is the rest of your story. Who you choose to be.”
You can let the past define you and let it determine the rest of your life. Or, you can choose to heal and allow the past to be a learning lesson for yourself, or for even others. It takes time for those to heal, and that’s okay. As long as you heal yourself. Just understand that you’ll be holding yourself back from the possibilities of greatness, and more importantly, peace. Let yourself have peace and bring love to yourself. And if you can, bring love into those memories.
Practice makes perfect
Now, I’m telling you, this takes practice. I mean, it took me some practice. If ever I felt as if I was getting worried about the future, I would tell myself that everything’s going to work itself out. It’s not my job to worry about how certain factors will come into play. So, obviously, practice!
