Are you a vanilla girly? Maybe you want to smell like a beach? A bakery? You could have no idea! Or, you’re on a mission to figure it out now! Well, let me be here to help you! Now, I’ll admit, I found my scent early. And personally, I’m a vanilla girly! Just something about the smell of vanilla beans is satisfying to me.
So, my methods may be old fashion, but these are the ways I found my personal vanilla scent. I hope that these methods help you narrow your selection down!
What scents do you even like?
Well, that’s a fundamental question! What are the scents that you like? The way that I figured out that I liked my scent is by going to the Bath and Body Works and just smelling every. single. smell. When I found out which scent I liked, I began to experiment with the variations in that category.
I know that this was a personal experience for me! I was at the mall, at a perfume department, and I just stopped randomly to smell some scents. After a while, I was just asking the sales associate questions as I picked out a perfume, and I found a scent that blew me away! Now, I have stated previously that I’m a vanilla girl. But this was a fruity scent that made me have a double take.
If I hadn’t opened my mind to smell other scents, then I wouldn’t have found the treasure that is my new perfume. On that same day, I also found a perfume that had a vanilla scent that I fell in love with! Of course, it took some training to actually smell it since it was very faint. But, once I could, it was finally a scent that I would be willing to wear.
For example, if I liked smells with coconut notes, I would go and find all the scents that had that specific note to figure out what other ingredients I like when mixed with the coconut note. With this in mind, you’re able to figure out all of the ingredients that you believe mix well together. Also, make sure that you differentiate the brands that create these scents.
Because, from my experience, there can be two different brands that can make the EXACT same product that has all of the same notes. Yet, they smell completely different. So, this is the summary for this section: Go to a place where they have multiple scents available and smell all the scents to figure out which ones you like. Once you did, then you experiment before the variations, and figure out if the brand makes the scent smell any different.
Do I want a scent that changes over time?
There are some scents, like perfumes, that have multiple notes. Depending on the scent that you choose, it can have just one note that lasts the whole day. While there are some perfumes that last throughout the whole day, their smell changes to where it feels like you’re wearing 5 different perfumes.
Now, this has to do with your own preferences. For me, I like both. I can have my most favorite scent on me throughout the whole day! Then, I can also have a scent that transforms.
Does it bode well on my skin?
And I have heard experts mention this, especially when it comes to perfume. You can spray a perfume on two individuals, and it can smell completely different on each individual. Sometimes, a perfume can smell really nice when you spray it in the air. However, when it’s put on your skin, the scent can differ A LOT!
Why? How is that possible? Well, everyone’s skin is different. The natural skin oils, the individual’s body chemistry, and the skin’s pH can affect the scent. Even the person’s body temperature can affect the scent. So, I would spray a new scent on my wrist. And here’s the key: DO NOT rub in the scent. You have to dab it so you don’t crush the notes of the scent.
See how the scent smells throughout the day. Sometimes you can even smell the notes change throughout the day. But, this is also a good time to see if there’s any reaction to the perfume. Is the scent too overbearing? Does it give me a headache? Does it even last all day? These are the questions that can be answered just by wearing the scent for the day.
