Everyone has their comfort place. That one destination where you feel as if the weight on your shoulder, all of your worries and everything that is being held in your head just disappears. For me, that was the ocean. I’m an ocean girl. I can be at the ocean for hours, days, and I would be satisfied. Every single time I’ve had a chance to pick out a vacation location, I always choose a place where there’s a beach nearby.
The warm and the cool
I always love the feeling of going to the beach on a hot day, and just going into the ocean. The slow steps and feeling the refreshing salt water hit your feet. Then, you begin to submerge yourself deeper and deeper into the ocean and then just submit yourself to the ocean’s waves. I could float above the sea and just bask in the sun.
I get the best of both worlds! I start to feel hot, then I go into the ocean to cool off. I start to feel cold after being in the water, I go back and let the sun cook me for a bit. Then, the cycle repeats. It’s just the place to be! I always hear people going to the beach, whether it’s in the spring, summer, fall, or winter.
Under the sea!
It feels like the ocean guides you towards and away from the sand and allows you to uncover the world that is a part of the 70% of the world. I would always bring my goggles to the beach and submerge myself underwater to see what was going on. I would always try to touch the fish and sea life. The only two things that I refused to touch were the sea urchin, Spongebob taught me that, and the sea cucumber.
I remember going on a cruise and we did an underwater excursion. They would let us touch and observe the diversity of the ocean’s ecosystem, which was in a netted area. One of the instructors pointed to a sea cucumber. I wanted to touch it at first until the instructor had to tell me which end was his butt and which end was the head. After that, I lost all interest.
Now, my favorite animal is the sea turtle. To me, it’s such a majestic animal that I would love to see in person one day. Finding Nemo’s Crush just had me hooked. I really want to see a sea turtle and just admire its beauty in person. It would be a dream for that to happen. But truly, the ocean is such an amazing place. And this brings me to the next point!
The undiscovered land
It’s amazing to me that we know more about the ever expanding space, the stars and the galaxies than our own ocean. To me, that’s insane! I mean, only around 5% of the ocean has been discovered by humans. Five percent. It’s insane to wrap your head around. There was one day when I was curious about all of the hidden fish and other species that may inhabit the ocean where humans do not dare to tread. I mean, remember, Finding Nemo and the Anglerfish! When I first watched it, I was amazed that a fish could be like that!
And, personally, I would like my knowledge to remain in the fact that they are real fish. I mean, I can go on about the species that live in the deep sea. There’s even bioluminescent fish! That is so cool! Can you imagine all of the undiscovered creatures in the sea that are just hanging out in the sea? I would like to know y’all’s little fascination about the ocean and its inhabiting creatures. They can be fun facts, experiences, or just opinions!
The ocean’s power
I love the beauty of the ocean, but I also respect the power that it has as well. I mean, we have all seen the power of the waves. Heck, you’ve probably even felt the power of a wave hit you. Whether it was unexpected or not, you definitely felt that force hit you. Let’s also not forget the origins of the hurricanes and tidal waves.
Some may underestimate a drop of water, but it’s never something to undermine. There’s the tides that can be produced in the ocean. I always think of the rip currents. It’s amazing how far a rip current can take you further away from shore, and sometimes you don’t even feel its effect on you. Can you imagine someone pushing you further away from your home and you not feeling anything?
Happy memories
This goes without saying, but there are so many happy memories that I cherish from being at the beach. It was during the summer, no school, and it felt like I could have all the time in the world with my family. The beach was a place where time stood still or it made time speed up. But, it was just because we were having so much fun!
We would pack the food that we would want to eat that day, bring our favorite drinks, and just drive to the beach. We would go on pit stops and I would enjoy every single moment of it. Then, at the beach, we would play mermaids, and this was before I discovered H₂O: Just Add Water. I would even make up our own games and just enjoy ourselves.
In more recent memories, I have been able to just enjoy the tranquil sounds of the waves crashing into the land and just observe the ocean attempt to recapture the land again. It’s truly a place where I could fall asleep to the sound of it. You can look at my photos in the phone and see that I have hundreds of photos saved from each beach trip. Some are from just the ocean, pictures of me and my family, or the sunset dipping below the horizon to introduce the moon to the sky.
